PSHE / RHE

Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education is fundamentally about educating the whole child

Intent

We believe that the PSHE education of the pupils in our school is vital in providing the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to manage their lives now and in the future. PSHE (which includes Relationships and Health Education) is at the heart of our school ethos and underpinned by our school values, whereby pupils develop the qualities and attributes to thrive as individuals, family members and members of society. Our PSHE curriculum places a strong emphasis on the importance of emotional wellbeing and mental health, and links closely with SMSC and British Values within the school.

We aim for all pupils to:

  • Become independent, confident, healthy and responsible members of the community and wider society.
  • Understand how they are developing personally and socially, and tackle many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up.
  • Learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it means to be a member of a diverse society.
  • Develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community.
  • Make informed decisions about their wellbeing, health and relationships, and build their self-efficacy.
  • Show an understanding for those with different faiths and beliefs in order for them to become fair, tolerant and confident adults.

Implementation

We believe that PSHE plays a vital part of primary education and it is integrated throughout our curriculum. We build on the statutory content outlined in the national curriculum and statutory guidance, and follow the PSHE Association scheme of work to provide consistency and progression across the school.

Our whole school approach to teaching PSHE education involves the following:

  • Using the PSHE Association scheme of work to teach core themes - Health and Wellbeing; Relationships; Living in the Wider World.
  • Threading Relationships and Health Education through these core themes.
  • Linking British Values, SMSC and key skills into other curriculum subjects.
  • Teaching PSHE in response to any issues in a particular class or global news events.
  • Linking whole-school assemblies to PSHE and the school's core values; respect, friendship, courage, thoughtfulness, patience, kindness, tolerance, honesty, perseverance, cooperation.
  • Using visitors, such as the emergency services and school nurse, to complement our PSHE curriculum and offer additional learning.
  • Incorporating enrichment days and activities, such as Anti-Bullying week and the NSPCC 'Speak Out, Stay Safe' programme, to develop and extend the school's PSHE provision.
  • Using floor books to record responses to PSHE sessions and evidence progress.

Impact

Our pupils will develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to keep themselves healthy, safe and prepared for life and work in modern Britain. They will understand what constitutes a healthy relationship and what it means to be a positive member of a diverse, multicultural society. The skills, language, strategies and understanding our pupils develop through PSHE education will help them to go on to live healthy, safe, fulfilling, responsible and balanced lives.
