Welcome to our Pre-School

Welcome to Templefield Lower School and thank you for visiting our website. We are situated in the small town of Flitwick, a semi-rural location in Bedfordshire. Windmill Pre-School joined us with the help of our governering team and the comittee for pre-school back in 2019.

There are 7 areas of learning in the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum.

Prime areas

  • Communication and Language
  • Physical Development
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development

Specific areas

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Art and Design

In the EYFS, the children are able to learn through independent play as well as through planned, adult-led activities. Within the indoor and outdoor learning environment, there are lots of different areas set up to develop the children’s skills in all 7 areas of learning.

Your child will have an online 'Learning Journal’ in which we record details of the learning and skills they are developing. The staff will be continuously assessing your child and will record on Tapestry work they feel shows progression in their learning.

Here are some things you can do to help your child prepare for starting pre-school:

  • Support your child to be toilet trained and able to use the toilet independently, where possible.

  • Encourage them to wash their hands independently.

  • Encourage them to put on and take off their coat.

  • Encourage them to eat using a knife, fork and spoon.

  • Encourage them to share with others and take turns.

  • Help them to recognise their own name.

  • Help them to recognise their own belongings (e.g. coat, water bottle, bag).

  • Share books together to help develop a love of reading.

  • Sing nursery rhymes together, including number rhymes.

  • Play counting games.

  • Develop their fine motor skills by threading, using dough or any other activities to get their little fingers moving.

  • Develop their organisational skills e.g. carrying their own bag, opening their bag and putting things inside it on their own.
